Sun Valley Dairy 1

Planning:

After buying air tickets, booking hotels Mr. Man gave me the responsibility to plan our much waited Sun Valley tour.
You may ask, why we chose lesser known Sun Valley. While searching a place to visit in summer suddenly Mr. Man saw an advertisement on Sun Valley. Then I searched about the place on Internet , and found that a place worth to visit.

It was a four day tour. My target was to utilize most of the time.

How I planned:
For any vacation long before planning , buying air ticket, and hotels first we always decide what kind of vacation we are expecting. We generally do not go for any luxury vacation. Even we do not do any adventure sports. As our son was little, so we used to avoid any adventure sports. In future we may try to do some kind of adventure sports and activities during vacation.

We decided to do a simple road trip from Boise to Sun valley. Time is always the main constraint on any vacation. If you choose to see the places, you may need to drop any specific activity. As we had only three days actually in hand, we decided not to do any strenuous hike, as it always takes an entire day.

When we decided to do only sight seeing, I started doing the actual plan. To do plan I had to make at least three drafts. Even after doing that, I made few mistakes, which I’ll write in the later part of this post.

First I just blindly search for places to visit in the Internet. Thanks to Internet I came up with plenty of places to visit. I wrote down all the places. Almost all the trails were moderate to strenuous. So, I dropped the idea of hiking.

Then I planned to visit all the scenic places near Sun Valley. After writing down all the places, I put them in the map. After putting them in the map, I was able to understand.

Our flight was to reach Boise at night. So, we decided to stay back in hotel in Boise, and started for Sun Valley next morning. I tried to search places on the way to Sun Valley. So, if you got to Sun Valley from Boise, you take the route via Stanley through Sawtooth National Forest. The direct route to from Boise to San Valley is barren , except the Shoshone Falls.

On the other hand via Stanley route is a scenic route. If you love history, do not miss the Idaho city on the way to Stanley. Once flamboyant, now deserted ghost town, you may able to see how was the life during gold rush.

Through the scenic route you will pass through the coniferous Boise National Forest ,come across stunning lakes, which are famous for kayaking.I kept few lakes in my plan.I love to sit beside the blue water to breath fresh air, which always calm down my mind.

Then I searched for the places near Sun Valley. We had two days in our hand. For the first day we decided to go to Crater of the Moon. Crater of the moon national Monument is a must-visit place near Sun Valley. One should not miss the place. Carter of the Moon is towards north from Sun Valley. As we had to walk a lot there, we decided to go there in the morning. However, it took almost entire day. I had no idea how to visit the place. I couldn’t find any satisfactory information on Internet. I will mention everything when I’ll write in details about the place. From there we went to Shoshone Falls, which is towards south from Sun Valley. So, this two places took the entire day.

On the last day we didn’t keep much places to visit, as next day we had a long drive from Sun Valley to Boise. So, on last day in Sun Valley I kept, Ketchum, Sun Valley museum, and do-not-miss Ernest Hemingway Memorial in my list.

If you are a foodie, do not forget to eat around Ketchum. In Ketchum town you'll get numerous options to eat out.

After all these planning, still I made some mistakes. One thing I learned that, next time I must search for the details of every place I decide to visit.
One mistake I made, keeping Easley Hot Spring of Sawtooth Forest in my plan. I didn’t search details about the place. I was under the impression that, that would be natural geyser, but that is a mad made heated swimming pool. So, we wasted some time there.

Another one that, I thought Hemingway Memorial, and grave are in same place. However, in reality they are two are different places. Hemingway  grave is in Ketchum cemetery, and Memorial is few minutes north from there.

Last mistake was going to watch Milky way at night. Sun Valley sky is one of the cleanest sky, from where you can see milky way, and numerous stars. However, the night must be moonless clear night. You need to somewhere in the valley without any street light. Then you may see the milky way. When we visited the Sun Valley the it was full moon time. On a moonlit night we went to see the stars, and that was foolish job we did. So, you need to keep in mind that the night must be moonless.

This was my plan of Sun Valley visit. One tip I would like to say, for any trip. Try to find out someone who already visited the place, and have all the maps from the visitor centers. You may find many things from the maps, and flyers from the visitor centers which you may not find in Internet.

I know we all make holiday mistakes and it looks as though you still had a wonderful time, despite any on your end. That's an especially good tip about the moon and milky way, though!

My husband likes to check out the brochures of a place and like you said, check with someone who has been there if possible. We are always looking at maps of an area.

I'm not even sure I would call these mistakes. We never completely plan our trips, there is always room for error and thus also room for some wonderful things to see that we hadn't known before.
We do love Craters of the Moon. Both times we were there we went early in the morning and left before it became too hot. It's a fascinating place.
