Halloween 2012

Since last September  my son was extremely excited about Halloween, and so was  I. Everyday day he used to ask me about  Halloween . It was  difficult  for him to wait for one long month. Till last to last year he couldn’t understand what exactly is it? So, we also didn’t take any interest to celebrate Halloween. However, this time he was extremely enthusiastic . Actually this time he came to know about all the fun of Halloween from his teacher. I understood that, we were going to have a fun filled day. We bought him a Spiderman costume. Actually, he wanted to buy a fireman dress, but unfortunately we didn’t find his size. Anyway, he chose the Spiderman costume instead.
That very day, my sonny got up early in the morning out of excitement with a happy face ,unlike his everyday grumpy face . I didn’t have to  wake him up. He had his breakfast without any tantrum, and decked up for the Halloween celebration in school. In the morning we all three went to watch the Halloween parade at the school.  Generally his father goes to school, to drop him.  All the students made a big circle in the ground , class wise. We, parents stood at the back with camera ready in our hand. Every class took a round with their teacher around the ground. Ever student came into their best costumes.  My son led the parade holding his teacher’s hand of pre-K. That spectacular colorful parade was so much fun that that one hour passed by, and we didn’t realize.
After the parade I had nothing to do in school, but going back home was out of question, as  I had a duty for the pre-K party just after an hour. So, I decided to wait at the nearby Starbucks. Sitting in Starbucks without any coffee in hand was not possible for a Starbucks fan like me. After getting in the store suddenly I felt the urge to try something else apart from latte. I tried White-chocolate mocha for the first time. It was too sweet for  a latté-person like me. I forgot to take any book with me, and sitting idle with just a cup of coffee is always boring. So, I called one of my friends and chatted with her. Anyway, after spending some time there I headed towards the school.
Almost all the mothers had started arriving with full enthusiasm. Suzan came dressed as cat woman. All of us had some duties to do there. It was the first time for me. So, I didn’t know actually what was going to happen. Other mothers, whose children already in the toddler class knew about the party. Anyway, my duty was to make monster claws for the children. It was great fun, making claws with transparent gloves, finger chips and pop-corns. I helped the children to make those claws. My son became jealous as he saw me  helping other children. I had to calm down him. Anyway, there were numerous types of activities for the children and they enjoyed them  thoroughly. In the mean time one of his classmate’s birthday was also celebrated. After the celebration of birthday, the party began. We the mothers sat at different table with different activities and the children came to us to do all those. After the  activities we had a hearty lunch with plenty of cake, pizza, pasta and fruits. Thus ending the party on a sweet note.

I created a mini album for the 2012 Halloween. I yet to put any picture on that. Still I'm sharing the empty album with you.

N.B. I like to thank my friend who helped me to write it.

Handmade candle stand

During Thanksgiving I desperately wanted a candle stand. However all the stands were too costly to me. Getting fed up I decided to make something on my own. I had not much time in my hand. I couldn’t find something very interesting in my head. Lastly I came up with this one. Though personally I was not much satisfied with the outcome, still it was fine.

Here I’m giving the steps how I made this candle stand.

Things you'll need:

A small plastic plate

A plastic glass

news paper

white paper

glue

scissors

decorating items

 Here are the instructions:

Take a cover of any container. I took  a margarine container cover to make the top.

Cut newspaper into small pieces and cover it. Cut a round shape with  a white paper and glued on the top.

Take a party glass and cover it with  small pieces of newspaper.

Decorate the plate and the glass separately, and glued the plate on the top of the glass. The stand is ready

Carrot soup

Carrots are very good to health. So, I always buy carrots, when I do grocery. This time I was too busy to go to market.  I sent my hubby dear, and he bought a bagful of carrot. I really didn’t know what to do those carrots. Only thing I knew that I’d to finish them. I mainly use carrots in lentil or in chicken curry. I’d to find some new ways to consume all the carrot. One brilliant idea was cooking carrot soup. Long ago I cooked carrot soup. In fact at that time I found a good recipe in a cook book. This time though the cook book was in my reach, but I was too lazy to take out from the cubby and go through the recipe. So, I cooked something whatever came in my mind.
Carrot soup
Serving size: 2
Ingredients:
2 carrots
A handful of green beans
6-7 clove of garlic
1 medium sized tomato
¼ tsp dried oregano
1 tbsp sour crème
Salt to taste

Method:
Finely chop the beans and tomato, and keep aside. Cut the carrots into big pieces. Boil the carrots in pressure cooker. Let the cooker cool down. Make a fine paste of carrot and crème. Mince the garlic cloves. Heat oil in a wok, and add the oregano.  When fine aroma starts coming out add the garlic. Sauté for 1 minute, add the beans and tomato.  Cover the wok, and cook for 5-6 minutes in medium heat. Add the carrot paste along with one cup of water, and bring it to boil. Cook until the beans become tender. Serve hot with toasted bread.

Apple-cranberry pork chops

On 24th December last year, my hubby ardently wanted to dine out. I told him that, almost every store was going to be closed, so I would cook at home. Then he wanted to take at least one dish from restaurant. So he went in the evening. As usual, all the restaurants were close. As he could nothing, he went to Trader Joe’s. Thankfully that store was open. I wasn’t with him. So, he utilized his total freedom and came home with two bottles of wine and a packet of pork chops. I had never cook pork chops before. Anyway few days before I watched a recipe of pork chops on Paula Dean’s show in Food channel. However, when we actually wanted to cook the pork chops I found that I totally forgot the recipe. I searched on the Internet, but couldn’t find. So, from my obscured memory I cooked the pork chops, which turned out good.
Ingredients:
6 pork chops
1 apple
1 medium sized onion
½ dried cranberry
pinch of dried oregano
pinch of salt
1 ½ tbsp brown sugar ( I used normal white sugar)
1 tbsp butter/oil ( I used olive oil)

Method:
Marinate the chops overnight with salt and oregano in the refrigerator. Before cooking, take out the pork chops from refrigerator and keep aside. Peel the apple, and cut into cube.  Cut the onion into cube. Heat one tablespoon of oil, add apple cubes, onion, cranberry, and a pinch of salt. Cook for few minutes, add the sugar. Stir constantly, and let the sugar caramelized. Add ½ cup water cook until all the ingredients becomes soft. When the water almost dries up add the pork chops. Insert the pork chops under the gravy. Make sure to keep the gravy always over the chops. Cook for 6-7 minutes. Flip the chops and cook for another 6-7 minutes. The chops are done. Serve with mashed potato.

Cauliflower soup and zucchini-corn bread

12/19/2012
In this Christmas I’ve decided to cook some different dishes every day. However, the problem is that, on 25th we are going for a vacation. So, I had to finish everything what is left in the fridge. I can’t buy anything extra whatever I want to cook. However, I’ve to cook something different with whatever is left in refrigerator. Few days ago I bought a pack of sour crème. I don’t know why I bought that. Now I’ve to finish it up before going on vacation. I’ve no idea what to do with that. I haven’t found any recipe on Internet. Better to say that I have found lots of recipe with crème, but none of them are good for me. I need something else to cook any of them. So, I’ve cooked something with my own recipe.
Creamy-cauliflower soup

Method:
Cut the onion into big blocks. Boil the pieces onion in 1 cup of water until tender. Let it cool. Paste the onion. Boil the cauliflower florets in 1 cup of water about 8 minutes. Darin the water, and keep aside. Heat 1 tsp oil and char fry the florets.  In a separate pan heat one tbsp of oil and add the fenugreek seeds. When fine aroma starts coming out add onion paste, and sauté it for few minutes. Add ginger paste and cumin powder in it, add sauté for 5 minutes. Make a fine paste with crème and half cup water. Add the crème paste into it. Add the cauliflower florets. Add 1 cup of water and cook in medium flame for 10 minutes or boil to the desired thickness.

Zucchini-corn bread
1 cup all purpose flour
1 cup corn meal
1 large zucchini
½ cup yogurt
2 tbsp flax seed powder
6 tbsp water
¼ cup sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
Salt to taste
Method:
Pre heat the oven at 350 F. Grate the zucchini and mix all the ingredients with a ladle. Grease a baking pan and pour the batter into the pan. Bake for 30 minutes or until a fork inserted comes out clean.
